3DES / Triple DES is a higher encryption mandaded by the Federal Government via the PATRIOT ACT and affects all independent and bank Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). It is an upgrade from the previous Single DES, which encrypted ATM customers cards once, whereas 3DES encrypts their personal information three times.
What is Triple DES ("3DES")?
The Triple DES upgrade process consists of two steps:
- Hardware Upgrade
- Software Upgrade
We have 3DES Upgrade kits available for all make and models of ATMs. Find your ATM manufacturer on the top right of the screen, go to that webpage, then find your ATM model. There you will see a description of the ATM make and model, a description of the kit, as well as pricing. Once you purchase the Triple DES upgrade kit from us, we will send a certified technician to run the software upgrade and program your ATM.
How is an ATM upgraded to Triple DES?
Because as per the Federal Government, your ATM MUST be upgraded to 3DES as of January 1, 2007. The networks are shutting down all ATMs that are not currently upgraded. If your ATM is not upgraded by this time, it will not be able to process transactions through the major networks for much longer, according to Federal Law and the Patriot Act.
